Polynesian/Oceanian Cookbooks
Sam Choy's Polynesian Kitchen Sam Choy's Polynesian Kitchen: More than 150 Authentic Dishes from One of the Worlds Most Delicious and Overlooked Cuisines - by Sam Choy (2002) - A truly delightful cookbook, as valuable for Choy's real Polynesian recipe collection, gathered from his travels throughout the South Seas, as for the photos and his personal commentary. Sam Choy's Polynesian Kitchen includes a helpful Polynesian ingredients glossary.
Tradewinds and Coconuts Tradewinds and Coconuts: A Reminiscence & Recipes from the Pacific Islands - by Jennifer Brennan (2000) - This book, full of authentic recipes, gives the reader a real feel for the culinary culture of the islands. Includes menu suggestions and an extensive glossary of the exotic foods of Oceania. Tradewinds and Coconuts and Sam Choy's Polynesian Kitchen were a real pleasure to read and cook with.
Savour the Pacific Savour the Pacific: A Discovery of Taste - by Annebel Langvein, et al - A book with a fresh feel, the recipes mostly refreshing, light and easy to make, some travelog, many pictures, some information on ingredients and Pacific Island life style - a little bit of this a little bit of that, still the recipes are very good. Many of the recipes in Savour the Pacific are the kind I look for when I have, say, bananas, fish, mangos, eggplant and coconut and wondering what different to make with it all. Kinda what Sam Choy says, look around to see what you have then cook - which is true island Style.
Kathy Cooks Naturally Kathy Cooks...Naturally - by Kathy Hoshijo - This is a one-of-a-kind book that is unfortunately out-of-print. You can still buy it used. Kathy Cooks is a must have, particularly if you live in Hawai‘i or the tropics. Over 1000 healthy, natural, vegetarian recipes from the former host of the very popular TV program, Kathy’s Kitchen. The book is arranged by kinds of fruit and vegetables and each chapter includes great gardening, cooking and shopping tips. Expect black & white drawings and photos, some of Old Hawai‘i, and a cornucopia of interesting recipes such as Avocado Ice Cream and an Italian sauce that uses cumin, asafetida and cinnamon!!
